Graduate job statistics.

Graduates in the UK are struggling to get jobs. It's not uncommon to hear about it in the news, on blogs, forums and various other mediums.

Statistics for the end of 2010 show that graduate unemployment is almost double what it was a decade ago in 2001.  The latest graduate job statistics show that around 20% of graduates were unemployed, compared with 11% or 12 % in 2001. 20%, or one in five, is a record high rate and is having serious consequences on graduate employment long term.

Some interesting graduate job statistics:

  • Statistics show that students who have opted to take an industrial placement or professional year out during their University course have a higher chance of securing a job after graduating.
  • Graduates who have studied at specialist Universities have a higher chance of securing a graduate job in their field.
  • Studies show that the top five subjects to study if you're looking to secure a job straight out of University are Medicine (including dentistry and veterinary science), Education, Law, Biology and Languages. These subjects boast an average employment statistic of around 95%. However, these statistics may not give an accurate representation of the state of the graduate population - the graduate job statistics come from answers made by graduates who were willing to participate in questioning, whilst they also do not illustrate if the graduates who are employed have jobs in their field of study.

From a graduate recruiter perspective, one has to wonder why there still seems to be a lack of graduates looking to enter the food industry. Focus Graduates works with leading, international blue chip food businesses yet there still exists a plethora of graduates who have never considered a career or graduate scheme in the UK's largest manufacturing sector - the food industry.
